UNDERSTAND YOUR CARDS

Know your next chase

Start with the product and card number, then check the finish, numbering and format. Use the glossary whenever a checklist term is unfamiliar.

Identify your parallel

  1. Match the product. Confirm the year, set, section and card number in the checklist search.
  2. Read the card. Look for a parallel name, foil pattern and serial stamp on both sides. A photograph alone can hide reflective details.
  3. Check the exact section and format. Compare with the manufacturer’s checklist and odds. A base parallel list may not apply to autograph or insert sections.

Refractor

A reflective treatment associated with Topps Chrome products. Shine alone does not identify the exact parallel or its scarcity.

Wave and RayWave

Pattern names, not print runs. Match the full name, colour and numbering to that product’s official parallel list; avoid identifying them from colour alone.

Numbered colours

A gold or blue card does not have a universal print run. Read its stamp: 17/99 means copy 17 of a 99-copy version, not that only 99 cards of the player exist.

Format exclusives

A parallel may be restricted to a particular box format. Compare Hobby, Value and other format columns in the odds sheet before choosing a box.

Try an official example: the Topps Chrome Premier League product page links its checklist and format-specific odds. Use these together; an available parallel does not guarantee a particular player can be pulled in every section.

Collector glossary

12 terms

RC
Rookie card. An RC logo is a designation used on the card; an early prospect or debut release may be a different category.
SP / SSP
Short print / super short print: scarcer cards or variations. The label alone does not give an exact production count.
RPA
Rookie patch autograph: a rookie card combining an autograph and patch. Read the memorabilia statement for its provenance.
Redemption
A card exchanged with the issuer for another card later. Check its expiry and the manufacturer’s current redemption terms.
Case hit
A term for a scarce insert associated with case-level odds. Check the product’s published odds rather than assuming every case contains one.
Base card
A card in the main checklist, before considering alternate finishes or designs.
Insert
A separate themed checklist within a product, distinct from its base set.
Parallel
An alternate finish, colour or treatment of a card. Some parallels are numbered; others are not.
On-card / sticker autograph
The signature is written directly on the card, or on a label attached to it. Check the card and product description.
Relic / memorabilia
A card containing material. Player-worn, match-worn and other descriptions are different: read the certification on the card.
Print run
The stated number of copies of a particular card version. Serial numbering such as 17/99 identifies one copy within that run.
1/1
One copy of that specific version. The same subject can have other distinct 1/1 versions.

Definitions are a starting point. Product-specific wording, checklists and odds take priority. See Topps’ collector glossary and its Superfractor explanation. Reviewed 20 October 2026.
