Quick answer
Choose a magnetic holder when you want to display a single card and can match its thickness to the holder. Choose a sleeve and top loader for inexpensive, compact protection of many cards.
What a magnetic holder is for
A two-piece magnetic holder closes around one card and presents it with less visible plastic than a sleeve and top loader. It is convenient for displaying a favorite autograph, numbered parallel or patch card. It costs more and takes more space per card than a top loader.
Some holders advertise UV-blocking additives, but that is not permission to leave a card in direct sun. Keep displays away from strong light and heat.
Fit matters more than the brand name
Magnetic holders come in different point sizes. A 35pt holder suits thin standard cards; thick stock and memorabilia cards need a deeper recess. Check the maker’s stated capacity and make sure the halves close without pressing on the card.
Check whether the model is designed to hold a bare card or a sleeved card. A standard penny sleeve may not fit inside every recessed magnetic holder. Follow that model’s instructions rather than forcing the sleeve into the recess.
35pt ONE-TOUCH or ONE-TOUCH X?
Ultra PRO’s standard 35pt ONE-TOUCH accepts standard 2½ × 3½ inch cards up to 35pt. The ONE-TOUCH X has extra room for a 35pt card inside a compatible sleeve, up to Ultra PRO Platinum sleeve #15221. Do not assume another brand or model has the same sleeve clearance.
| Holder | Useful distinction |
|---|---|
| Regular top loader + sleeve | Compact storage and trading; check sleeved fit. |
| Standard 35pt ONE-TOUCH | Display holder with a 35pt card recess. |
| ONE-TOUCH X | A larger recess specifically designed for compatible sleeved 35pt cards. |
Use the right holder for the job
- Set building and bulk storage: sleeve plus an appropriate card box.
- Regular singles and trades: sleeve plus correctly sized top loader.
- A small display of favorites: correctly sized magnetic holder, away from direct sunlight.
- Grading submission: follow the grader’s current semi-rigid packaging instructions.
Common questions
Will every penny sleeve fit inside a magnetic holder?
No. Sleeve clearance is model-specific. Choose a holder expressly designed for sleeved cards and check the compatible sleeve dimensions.
Check the official source ↗Is a 35pt magnetic holder suitable for every Chrome or patch card?
No. Measure the individual card. The set name and finish alone do not establish its thickness, and the holder must close without pressure.
Should I use a magnetic holder for grading submission?
Use the grader’s submission instructions. For PSA, the current guide specifies a clear sleeve and semi-rigid holder rather than a display case.
