Quick answer
For a standard-size card, put the card in a clean soft sleeve first, then slide the sleeved card into a correctly sized top loader. Check thicker cards against the holder’s point size before inserting them.
What each layer does
A soft sleeve helps shield the card surface from rubbing against the rigid plastic. The top loader adds stiffness that helps reduce bending and corner damage during ordinary storage and handling. Ultra PRO recommends this pairing as a starting setup for sports cards.
Do not force an unsleeved card into a top loader. If a sleeve or holder catches the corners, stop and try a larger size rather than pushing harder.
How to choose a size
Many modern sports cards use the standard 2½ × 3½ inch format. Ultra PRO lists its regular 3 × 4 inch top loader for standard cards up to 35pt thick. The 35pt figure describes card thickness capacity, not the outer dimensions of the holder.
Memorabilia patches and some premium sets are thicker. Check the card’s thickness against the maker’s 55pt, 75pt, 100pt or thicker holder options. A regular 35pt holder that pinches the card is the wrong choice.
Choose by card size, thickness and purpose
Check three things separately: the card’s width and height, its thickness, and whether the holder is for storage, display or submission. A patch card is not automatically a particular point size; measure the actual card rather than choosing from the set name.
- Standard thin card: soft sleeve, then a compatible regular top loader.
- Thicker stock or memorabilia: use the maker’s thickness guide and check the sleeved fit without pressure.
- Grading submission: use the grader’s required holder instead of assuming a storage holder is accepted.
A safe insertion routine
Clear the workspace, inspect the sleeve and holder for grit, and hold the card by its edges. Open the sleeve slightly, guide the card in without dragging a corner across the opening, then slide the sleeved card into the top loader without pressure.
If you ship the card, add a team bag or other closure so the sleeved card cannot work its way out. Protect the rigid holder inside the parcel too; a top loader alone is not a shipping box.
Top loader or semi-rigid holder?
A top loader is a convenient rigid holder for collection storage and trading. A semi-rigid holder is a different format often used for grading submissions. Follow the grader’s current packaging directions for the exact service: PSA’s shipping guide calls for a penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder, and PSA advises against sending cards in hard acrylic snap cases or top loaders.
Common questions
Do I need a penny sleeve inside a top loader?
Use a soft sleeve as the inner layer for everyday storage and handling. If the sleeved card will not slide into the holder freely, stop and check the fit.
Does 35pt describe the size of the card?
It describes thickness capacity, not width or height. Ultra PRO’s regular top loader has a 3 × 4 inch exterior and accepts standard 2½ × 3½ inch cards up to 35pt.
Check the official source ↗Can I send PSA a card in a top loader?
PSA’s current shipping guide specifies clear sleeves and semi-rigid holders. It says not to use top loaders, tape, pull tabs or sticky notes.
